Jacob Ide

  • born in Attleborough, MA, March 29,1785
  • graduated Brown University in Providence. RI in 1809
  • studied theology at Andover - graduated 1812
  • served at the Park Street Church in Boston, MA as an assistant to Dr. Griffin
  • ordained Nov. 2, 1814
  • pastor Second Church of Christ in Medway 1814 - 1865; pastorate began during the war of 1812 and ended during the Civil War
  • married Mary Emmons, youngest daughter of Rev. Nathaniel Emmons of Franklin, in 1815
  • served the town of Medway as a school committee member from 1815 - 1850
  • about 1816 built his homestead on the corner of Main and Winthrop Streets
  • 1817 - published his famous sermon on Intemperance
  • 1827 - received honorary STD from Brown
  • Oct.1829 - thrown from his horse and run over by his carriage - received a wound in the left knee which deprived him of the use of his leg. This injury took him from his pastoral duties for a year and a quarter
  • referred to himself as an invalid - this caused him to realize his full dependence on God
  • 1837- awarded a Doctor of Divinity degree from Brown University
  • in addition to being a pastor he was known as an editor, author, and teacher of theology.
  • delivered his 50th anniversary address on November 2, 1864
  • prepared at least 40 men for the ministry
  • contributed many articles and also served as editor of "The Christian Magazine"
  • Son- in- law Charles Torrey was convicted of helping runaway slaves and sentenced to Baltimore Prison in Maryland. Despite Dr. Ide's pleas to the governor of Maryland, Torrey was left to die of consumption in the prison
  • died Jan.5, 1880

  • Charles W. b. January 20, 1829 d. August 29, 1829
  • George Hopkins b. May 10, 1830 d. July 10, 1831
  • George Homer b. February 3, 1835 d. August 9, 1862 (buried on the battlefield at Cedar Mountain, VA)
